The braking system is the most important safety system on the vehicle, and it is one that wears constantly. Pads wear against discs, discs wear thin and warp, fluid absorbs moisture and loses its boiling point, and handbrake cables stretch.
We replace pads and discs, change brake fluid, sort out sticking calipers and adjust handbrakes, all on site. If you are hearing a grinding noise, do not leave it — once the pad material is gone, the backing plate is cutting into the disc and a straightforward job becomes an expensive one.
When you need this
Any of these sound familiar?
- Squealing or grinding when you brake
- The car pulls to one side under braking
- The brake pedal feels spongy, or travels further than it used to
- A vibration or judder through the pedal or steering wheel when slowing down
- The brake warning light is on
- The handbrake needs several more clicks than it used to
- It has failed an MOT on brakes or brake imbalance
What the job covers
- Replace front and rear brake pads
- Replace brake discs, or drums and shoes on older vehicles
- Change brake fluid and bleed the system through
- Free off or replace sticking or seized calipers
- Replace corroded brake pipes and flexible hoses
- Adjust or replace handbrake cables
- Check the whole system afterwards and road test it
Why have it done at home?
You don't lose a day to it. No dropping the vehicle off, no arranging a lift back, no waiting for a phone call to say it's ready. We turn up where it's parked, do the work, and you carry on with whatever you were doing.
We fit new or good-quality used parts depending on what suits you and the vehicle. Ask when you book and we will price both.
Before we arrive
The vehicle needs to be on firm, reasonably level ground so it can be jacked safely. A driveway or a solid parking space is fine; soft ground or a steep slope is not.
Questions we get asked
Is grinding safe to drive on?
No. Grinding usually means the friction material has worn through and metal is running on metal. Stopping distances get longer and the discs are being damaged with every stop. Ring us rather than driving on it.
How long do brake pads last?
Anywhere between 20,000 and 50,000 miles, depending on how and where you drive. Town driving and towing wear them faster than motorway miles.
Do I need discs as well as pads?
Not always. Discs have a minimum thickness and if there is enough left, and no lipping or warping, pads on their own are fine. We measure them and tell you which it is.
Can you do brakes in the rain?
Usually, yes — we work under cover where we can. If the weather makes a job unsafe or would risk contaminating something, we will say so and move it rather than rush it.

Broken down or won't start? Ring rather than book — roadside work can't wait for a slot.
